I’ve been inspired by Tom MacWright’s amazing blog to construct one of my own! It’s very easy to see I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from (read: copied) the style of his site. (I did implement a key add-on: dark mode!) I don’t know if I’ll have anything interesting to say or share, but this seemed like a perfect excuse for another subdomain.
This blog is also built with Jekyll, and it’s been interesting to work with Liquid outside the context of Shopify. I work in e-commerce, so Shopify is unavoidable, but it’s given me a real leg up in working with Jekyll.
I moved apartments recently. Moving during a global pandemic was surprisingly not as bat-shit crazy as one might think — I live in New York, so the worst of the pandemic is (hopefully) past us at this point. It’s hard to be cooped up inside all day, especially during the summer, but I’m lucky to still have a job and to not live somewhere where the local government is even more incompetent than New York’s.
The new place has business-class internet. I’ve been getting very into self-hosting, and that’s why I made the switch from residential-class — my old ISP only allowed port 80 to be exposed. I got Gitea up and running in a matter of minutes, which was refreshing after spending the better part of a day trying to set up postfix + dovecot + roundcube.
